September is Healthy Aging Month in the United States. There are a lot of practices that go into healthy aging, but one to note is skin care and sun protection. How are you recommending sun protection to clients? Include it as part of their healthy aging regimen with the following support.

Sun Protection All Year Long

In the summertime, we think if it’s bright and hot outside, we should put on some sunscreen. However, that leaves us to ask the question of whether this should be an every day mindset. The sun’s UV rays don’t follow a calendar and will still find their way to us even on overcast days. Remember that the sun still shines in fall, winter and spring.

This is a practice that should be started and a part of our daily routine from an early age. While that shift in thinking is starting to occur, it’s growing at a slow pace.

  • A tan is healthy. False. Just because it isn’t a burn does not mean it is healthy.
  • My skin is dark, so I’m protected. Incorrect. UV rays can still penetrate the skin no matter what pigmentation it has.
  • I don’t burn, so I don’t need sun protection. Ouch. No.
  • Sunglasses aren’t important. Inaccurate. Remember your eyes are subjected to UV damage as well.
  • Sun damage is reversible. Negative.
  • The shade fully protects me from the sun. Wrong. While it is a good start, the shade does not provide full protection from the sun or its UV rays.

Whether it is in the blazing heat or in the middle of a downpour, all brides want to look flawless on their special day. As a makeup artist, this can present multiple obstacles. I practice makeup artistry in Oklahoma, where weather is varied and unpredictable. This has challenged me to put many techniques and products to the test. I have found a routine that has proven to work for me, and I am happy to share these makeup tips to give each of your bridal clients a lasting bridal look.

1. Prep and Prime

You want to have a conversation with your client beforehand about their skin care regimen and skin care concerns. You may need to offer recommen­dations for dry skin or even oil control. Ask your client to have their skin cleansed thoroughly and to apply the appropriate moisturizer prior to the appointment. Before starting the actual application, I feel the skin to ensure that the skin is adequately hydrated yet not too slick with product.

One thing is clear—consumers and many skin care professionals do not know as much about safe sun as they should. Our profession needs to embrace educating clients on sunscreens, and safe sun needs to become more paramount. There are a myriad of popular misconce­ptions, even about SPF ratings. It is amazing to think that many consumers and skin care professionals thought an SPF rating of 15 meant that one could safely stay in the sun for 15 hours. SPF is not related to time of solar exposure, but rather the amount of solar exposure which varies based on the time of day. One hour in the sun at 9 am may equate to 15 minutes at 1 pm.

The goal of this article is to provide a primer on sunscreen rules and regulations, what is allowed and what is not coupled with the tortuous and still pending litany of the U.S. Food and Drug Administ­ration (FDA) regulations governing sunscreens, which are classified as over the counter (OTC) drugs. Our personal safety and the environmental health of the planet are greatly impacted by sun care as is the spiraling cost of health care for increased skin cancer, which is becoming an expensive aspect of health care.

How to Transition for Spring Skin Care

Understanding How The Face Ages

Clients often visit the spa to have treatments and purchase products that help reduce wrinkles and fine lines. In the spa professional’s quest to help them look younger, it is important to understand the fundamentals of how the face ages.

Val Lambros, M.D., clinical professor of plastic surgery at University of California, Irvine, has contributed to literature in regards to how the face ages. At the Aesthetic Meeting of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery in Las Vegas, he presented, 3D Facial Averaging, which is the aging progress shown in 3D images through a 15-year time span.

“If you listen to ten plastic surgeons or dermatologists expound on the subject [of facial aging], you will hear at least eight explanations for what happens and how,” explained Lambros. “Most of these explanations have little to do with the process, but quite a lot to do with the surgical techniques designed to make aging faces look better.”

Revealed Discoveries
The 15-year study aimed to understand the progression of facial aging with a comparison of old and young patients in photographs in the year 2000.

“Starting in 2005, I began to use a 3D camera to scan plastic surgeons, since they show up to plastic surgery meetings at intervals,” said Lambros. “Since 3D images are digital, they can be analyzed mathemat­ically.”

In 2015, Lambros averaged hundreds of images of faces together as one image and animated another hundred images in an age group of 50 years and older to show the progression of aging.

According to Lambros, his study found the thinning of the lips influence the base of the nose, which pulls the tip of the nose toward the lip, in addition to influencing the nasolabial crease.

“These images have not been seen in plastic surgery and show in the clearest possible way what happens to facial shape with age,” explained Lambros. “Some aspects are known and easily seen and some are new to this study.”

Further Aging Studies
Lambros has conducted other research that suggests vertical descent of skin and subcutaneous tissue is not a major cause of aging. This research can be found in a 2007 study he  published in Plastic and Reconstr­uctive Surgery. He have been a strong component of filling rather than pulling in facial plastic surgery.
